Are you still baking with yeast dough? Nowadays, many people prefer to buy quick and easy cakes in the shops or bake something with puff pastry, which is much easier than waiting for it to rise. However, sourdough cakes have one big advantage. Not only do they taste good, but they can look masterful too! That’s why we have a recipe for sourdough poppy seed braid for you.
Poppy seed braid
What we will need:
for the dough:
- 1 packet dried yeast (7 g)
- 100 ml milk
- 3 tbsp crystal sugar
- 400 g plain flour
- 1 packet vanillin sugar
- 2 eggs
- 100 g butter
- 1 pinch salt
for the filling:
- 1 packet vanillin sugar
- 1 tbsp icing sugar
- 50 ml milk
- 100 g butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 pinch of salt
- 200 g ground poppy seeds
Still:
- 1 egg for spreading
How we will proceed:
1. Prepare a sourdough starter with yeast, milk and a teaspoon of sugar.
2. Mix all the other ingredients for the dough in a bowl and add the sourdough starter. Make a smooth dough. Cover with a dry cloth and leave in a warm place to rise for about 60 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, prepare the poppy seed filling. Heat the milk and melt the butter in it. Add the sugar and stir in all the poppy seeds. Stir well so that no lumps form.
4. Carefully transfer the dough to a floured rolling pin and roll it out into a rectangle. Spread the poppy seed filling over it and roll it up like a roll.
5. Cut the roll in half lengthways and knit it so that the filling is on top. Carefully transfer the dough into the greased tin. Bring the ends together to form a wreath.
6. Leave the wicker to rise for a while and brush it with egg wash.
7. Bake at 180 degrees for approximately 35 minutes. Finished!
