Great baked baguettes from fridge leftovers: fragrant and crispy dinner

When you want to prepare a great dinner and at the same time cleverly use up everything you already have open in the fridge, forget about making long shopping lists. Don’t throw away food – these homemade baked baguettes spread with fresh cheese, topped with ham, gouda, tomatoes, corn, fresh bell pepper, and baked with a mix of various leftover cheeses (cheddar, gouda, and smoked cheese) are absolutely top-notch and will disappear from the table in no time. The secret to success lies in smartly using up your supplies, a divine cheesy crust, and a perfect side of fries and both fresh and pickled vegetables.

What we will need:

For the baked baguettes:

  • Baguettes: fresh or pre-baked baguettes (cut in half)
  • Base spread: fresh cheese
  • Meat and vegetables: ham, tomatoes, corn, and fresh bell pepper (chopped)
  • Cheese mix (to use up leftovers): various types of cheese from open packs – gouda, cheddar, and smoked cheese (grated or sliced on top)

For serving and as a side:

  • Side dish: crispy fries
  • Sauces: mayonnaise and ketchup
  • Garnish: a plate with some fresh and pickled vegetables

Step-by-step preparation:

1. Preparing and spreading the baguettes: Cut the baguettes in half and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Generously spread each piece with a layer of fresh cheese.

2. Layering ham, vegetables, and cheeses: Place ham and chopped vegetables – tomatoes, corn, and fresh bell pepper – on the spread baguettes. Since we had open packs of various cheeses, generously sprinkle a mix of grated cheddar, gouda, and smoked cheese on top so everything bakes together perfectly and nothing in the fridge goes to waste.

3. Baking in the oven: Place the tray in a preheated oven and bake until the cheeses on top are completely melted, golden, and the baguettes are beautifully crispy.

4. Serving: Serve the finished baked baguettes hot, together with crispy fries, mayonnaise, ketchup, and a colorful plate full of fresh and pickled vegetables.

Proven tips for the best result:

  • Great use of leftovers: Combining different types of cheese (gouda, cheddar, and smoked) gives the baked baguettes an absolutely divine and rich flavor.
  • Quick and fragrant dinner: Using whatever you have at home and in the fridge creates a great and filling meal in no time.
  • Perfect vegetable side: The combination of warm baked flavors with crispy fries and a plate of fresh or pickled vegetables creates a balanced and delicious overall impression.
