Don’t put your basket away just yet. Ahead of the weekend of October 3rd–4th, good news is coming in from places like Svojetice, the Kladno region, and some areas in Moravia. At the same time, mushroom pickers are warning about dry conditions. So where should you head out? We looked at the latest reports from mushroom hunters and the weather, which could affect your weekend trip.
The first weekend of October is tempting for a walk in the woods, but choosing your destination based on someone else’s basket photo can be misleading. The date of the find and the exact location are also important. With fresh reports, it’s worth checking whether the author mentions young mushrooms, moisture in the forest, or, on the contrary, dry soil.
Where Mushroom Pickers Are Reporting Finds Before the Weekend
In recent days, the following reports have appeared. The date in the table indicates when the report was published; the actual trip may have taken place earlier.
| Location | What People Are Reporting | Published |
|---|---|---|
| Svojetice in Central Bohemia | Good finds from the October 1st trip, including younger mushrooms. However, the author warns that the forest is already drying out. | Oct 2 |
| Kladno Region | Reports of abundant growth of boletes and gilled mushrooms. This is the assessment of a specific contributor. | Oct 2 |
| Between Hrdlořezy and Petříkov in South Bohemia | A mushroom picker describes a successful Friday harvest of boletes. | Oct 2 |
| Kozlov and the area around Pohořany in the Olomouc region | Boletes, orange birch boletes, and slippery jacks were reported near Kozlov. From the Pohořany area, there was news of improved growth. | Sept 29 |
| Albrechtice in the Karviná region | The report mentions finds of worm-free mushrooms. | Oct 1 |
If you live near any of these areas, a fresh report can help you choose your trip. However, on its own, it is not a reason to travel across the country. Without the exact location and knowledge of local conditions, the same results cannot be guaranteed.
Where Dry Conditions Are Already Slowing Down Mushroom Picking
Good news isn’t coming from everywhere. From the Ždánický Forest, at a place called Bílý vlk, a mushroom picker published a report on October 2nd about a trip with no finds and a dry forest. A report from the Vysočina region on the same day also mentions dryness and only limited finds.
Differences are also noticeable in the northeast of the country. While there are reports of finds from the Karviná region, under Kněhyně in the Beskydy Mountains, a visitor described weak growth and a lack of moisture on October 1st. So even a well-known mushroom area does not automatically guarantee success. Weather for the weekend: warm temperatures will remain, rain will be light.
According to Friday’s forecast from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), published by TN.cz, Saturday should be mostly clear to partly cloudy with daytime temperatures of 20 to 24 °C. On Sunday, clouds will increase from the west, isolated showers may appear, and temperatures will reach 18 to 23 °C. Be sure to check your local forecast before heading out.
However, warmth alone is not enough for mushrooms. The key factor is how much moisture remains in the soil. ČHMÚ states that more significant growth usually occurs about ten days after substantial rainfall, provided suitable weather follows. This is not a fixed rule for all species and locations. A weak weekend shower is therefore not a reason to expect a new wave of boletes the very next day.

How to Choose a Place Where Searching Makes Sense
The importance of soil moisture leads to this practical recommendation for the weekend: when searching, give preference to places that haven’t dried out yet. Try shaded parts of the forest and low-lying areas where moisture lingers. This is a guideline for choosing a spot, not a guarantee of a find.
Before you leave, also check the current mushroom growth probability map from ČHMÚ. It is based on rainfall over the past 30 days and temperatures from the last week. It shows the suitability of conditions for growth, not actual mushroom finds. It works best when combined with fresh reports from your area.
Only Safely Identified Mushrooms Belong in Your Basket
The joy of finding mushrooms should never outweigh certainty. Only pick species you can identify with confidence, and discard any specimens missing important identification features. The Czech Mycological Society reminds us that when expanding your knowledge, verification by an expert on actual specimens is necessary; a photo alone may not be enough. Never add an unknown mushroom to your meal.

After Returning Home, Enjoy a Mushroom Lunch
If your trip is successful, you don’t have to stop at scrambled mushrooms. Fresh mushrooms can be used for a creamy mushroom sauce without flour or to prepare a hearty Sunday lunch.
Where have you had luck in recent days? Share the approximate area, the date of your trip, and whether the forest was moist or dry in the comments. Such information can help other mushroom pickers more than just a photo of your haul.
