I Was Sick on Vacation While My Boyfriend Got Closer to Our Friend. When We Got Home, He Told Me He Fell in Love With Her

When you’ve been with someone for three and a half years and have shared a home for two, you start to take the relationship as a given, a solid foundation. David and I had plans—this year we talked about getting engaged and even started looking at wedding rings. We were a well-matched couple with a close group of friends, and every year we went away together for a week-long trip.

This year, there were six of us renting a cottage. But on the very second morning, I was knocked out by a terrible flu with a fever over thirty-eight degrees. I could barely get out of bed, my head was pounding, and I spent the entire week shut away in the attic room with tea and tissues.

I expected David would at least make me tea, check in on me sometimes, and be there for me. But the reality was completely different.

While I was sweating under the covers, David spent every free moment with our mutual friend Denisa. Whenever they went hiking, out to lunch, or to the lake, they walked side by side. I noticed it from the window and from photos in our group chat—David was taking pictures of her at sunset viewpoints, bought her a small handmade souvenir at the market, and laughed at every silly thing she said.

When he came to my room in the evening, his mind was somewhere else. He seemed absent, nervously glancing at his phone, and when I asked how his day was, he just muttered, “Fine, but Denisa found a great trail.” It hurt, but I kept telling myself I was just being oversensitive because I was sick and didn’t want to ruin his holiday with our friends. I felt stupid for even feeling jealous at all.

The reality hit me the very first weekend after we got home.

We unpacked our bags, I did the laundry, and on Sunday I made a simple tomato soup with toast. David sat at the table, staring into his bowl and not eating. Then he looked up with a strangely empty expression and blurted out, “I have to tell you something. I’ve had feelings for Denisa for a while. On that vacation, I realized I can’t stop thinking about her.”

I just stood there with a spoon in my hand, feeling like someone had ripped my heart out. The person I was planning to marry and have kids with was telling me, after three and a half years, that he had fallen for a girl we usually sat at the same table with—and who I’d lent a dress to just a month before.

Loneliness and disappointment after David's feelings are revealed.

The worst part wasn’t even that he fell for someone else. The worst was the unbelievable humiliation. In that moment, everything from the holiday clicked into place. I was lying helpless upstairs with a fever, and right under my nose, in front of all our friends, he was openly flirting with another woman. Everyone in the group must have seen it, and I was just the naïve fool lying in my room.

I didn’t make a scene. I just put my plate down, looked at him, and told him to pack his things and leave.

I sat in the silent apartment over cold soup, crying out of anger and helplessness. It was a huge blow: you can think your relationship is solid for years to come, but all it takes is one illness, a few days apart at a cottage, and you realize your sense of security was built on a complete lie. And what hurts most isn’t the end of the relationship, but how easily your partner can replace you with someone you thought was your best friend just yesterday.
