When Pavel moved out, his parents kept calling me and inviting me for Sunday lunches. I thought they were just trying to keep a good relationship for the sake of our son. It wasn’t until a passing comment that I realized Pavel hadn’t told them why he left.
Pavel told me about the other woman on a Tuesday evening, after nine-year-old Matěj had fallen asleep. He said he’d been seeing her for several months and didn’t want to continue our marriage. I asked if he wanted to try to fix things. He shook his head. He had already found a new place and would move his things out on Saturday.
I remember those four days mostly as a series of tasks. In the morning, getting Matěj ready for school. In the afternoon, grocery shopping. In the evening, sitting at the same table with someone who had already planned his life elsewhere. Matěj sensed something was wrong. On Sunday, we told him together that his dad would be living in another apartment, but would still see him regularly. He asked if Pavel would come back. Back then, Pavel answered that he didn’t know. I already knew the answer.

“But You Both Agreed On It”
A week later, Pavel’s mother called me. She wanted to know if Matěj would come over for lunch on Saturday. We quickly agreed on that. He had a good relationship with his grandparents, and I didn’t want him to lose it.
Then she asked if I would come too. I told her not this time.
“Jana, I understand it’s still fresh, but surely you can talk to each other normally for Matěj’s sake. After all, you both agreed on the breakup,” she said.
For a moment, I thought I’d misheard her. I asked what Pavel had told her. According to his parents, our marriage hadn’t been working for a long time, and after a mutual discussion, we decided it would be better to live separately. He hadn’t mentioned another woman at all.
I knew he didn’t have to tell his parents every detail of our marriage. But it bothered me that he hid behind me when making his decision. His mother spoke as if I’d had plenty of time to come to terms with his leaving and was now just refusing to cooperate.
I told her briefly what had happened: “Pavel decided to leave. I didn’t agree with the breakup. He has a new relationship and moved out last Saturday.”
There was silence on the other end. Then she said she hadn’t known and needed to talk to her son. We agreed on when she’d pick up Matěj on Saturday, and ended the call.

I Didn’t Want To Explain His Leaving For Him
Pavel called me that evening. He was upset that I’d told his mother about the other woman.
“Couldn’t you have kept that to yourself? Now she thinks I’m some kind of selfish jerk,” he said.
I told him I wouldn’t be telling his parents about our arguments or what he’d said to me that Tuesday night in the kitchen. But if they asked me whether I wanted him to leave, I wasn’t going to lie.
He admitted he’d only told them that we’d “grown apart.” He said he wanted to spare them unnecessary details. I asked him why, then, he had added that we both agreed on the breakup. He didn’t answer that.

On Saturday, Pavel’s parents picked up Matěj as usual. His mother was awkward, and so was I. She didn’t apologize for something she hadn’t made up herself. She just said that Pavel had spoken to them and that she now better understood why I didn’t want to come to family lunches.
Pavel and I still coordinate because of Matěj. If he needs to change the day he picks him up, he texts me. If Matěj has a school performance, I send him the date. Sometimes we hand things over without a word, other times we discuss the whole next week.
I haven’t cut his parents out of our son’s life. I just don’t have to sit at their table anymore and listen to how Pavel and I supposedly decided together to end our marriage. That was never my decision.
