An autumn walk can easily become an opportunity to gather materials for an impressive home decoration. Using chestnuts, acorns, pinecones, moss, and ordinary twine, you can create an original tree in a frame that, when lit up, brings a pleasant and cozy atmosphere to your home.
What You’ll Need
- a frame with glass or transparent backing
- natural twine
- dried moss
- chestnuts and acorns
- small pinecones, shells, and other dried natural items
- delicate string lights with a battery pack
- a suitable adhesive for securing each part firmly
Clean all the natural materials before you start and let them dry thoroughly. Sort them on your work surface by size and shape so you can easily pick the right pieces when assembling the tree crown.
1. Prepare all your natural materials: First, get your frame, thicker natural twine, moss, chestnuts, acorns, and any other collected items ready. The photo also shows empty acorn caps, small pinecones, and other dry decorative elements. Choose chestnuts that are firm, clean, and free of mold. Before you start attaching the materials, try arranging them roughly to see how they will fit together.

2. Shape the trunk and branches: Use several longer pieces of twine to create a straight trunk. At the top, separate the strands and gradually spread them to the sides to resemble the branches of a deciduous tree. You can unravel some strands into thinner fibers to make the crown denser and more natural. Leave the lower ends of the twine slightly separated to look like roots.

3. Create a mossy base: Spread a continuous layer of green moss along the bottom edge of the frame. Cover the roots of the twine trunk and create a slightly uneven terrain. The moss adds color, depth, and the impression that the tree is really growing from the ground. Work in small sections and be careful not to cover too much of the trunk with the green base.

4. Decorate the crown with chestnuts and acorns: Arrange chestnuts, acorns, their caps, small pinecones, shells, and other dried natural items on the prepared twine branches. Distribute the largest chestnuts in different parts of the crown for a balanced look. Fill in the gaps with smaller items. The decoration doesn’t have to be perfectly symmetrical—irregularity will highlight its natural character.

5. Add the string lights: Discreetly run the delicate wire with lights around the inner edge of the frame and, if you like, near the crown as well. Place the battery pack at the bottom so it’s as inconspicuous as possible, but still accessible for turning on and changing batteries. Don’t stretch the wire too tightly and make sure it doesn’t bend or press against the natural materials.

6. Check the decoration when lit: Hang or place the finished picture in your chosen spot and turn on the string lights. The warm points of light around the frame will highlight the silhouette of the tree, the shiny chestnuts, and the vibrant green moss. This is the best moment to see if the lights are evenly distributed or if any part of the crown needs a little touch-up.

7. Fill in small gaps in the crown: Take a close look at the tree and focus on how the individual items are arranged. You can place smaller acorns, caps, pinecones, or light-colored dry shells between the large chestnuts. Mixing different sizes, colors, and textures will give the crown a richer look. Let the lights run along the edges as well, so the decoration glows across the whole surface.

8. Do a final check: Finally, make sure the trunk stays straight, the crown holds its shape, and the moss is firmly set along the bottom edge. Remove any loose fibers and check that the heavier chestnuts are securely attached. The finished glowing tree will look best on a light-colored wall or in a spot where it can serve as a gentle evening accent light.

Final Tip
Before hanging your decoration, let all the attached parts set firmly and carry the frame vertically. Only use string lights designed for decorations, and don’t cover the battery pack permanently with moss. If you won’t be using it for a while, remove the batteries. You can easily refresh the tree in future seasons by adding new dried items or replacing damaged moss.
