This small rustic cabin, built by its owner and surrounded by birches, ash, and oaks, stands on the shore of a small lake in the French region of Dordogne. Despite its appearance, the Woodsman’s Cabin is a new construction that achieved its ancient rustic look thanks to naturally wavy wooden cladding with live edges.
Rustic Cabin Surrounded by Birches, Ash, and Oaks
French doors lead you directly into the living area, which consists of a small kitchenette, dining space, and seating area. Most of the walls are finished with lime plaster, accented by several dark wooden panels and window trims.
In one corner, there is a highly crafted spiral staircase with a branch used as a railing. It leads to a cozy loft bedroom with exposed log beams. The bathroom, entered through a handmade door next to the kitchen, is located in a small shed-style extension attached to the side of the cabin. Here, you’ll find a composting toilet and a stone sink.
The Woodsman’s Cabin is off the electrical grid, but it still offers basic modern amenities. The kitchen stove and refrigerator run on propane. Water from the lake is pumped into tanks in the attic, from where it can flow by gravity to the sinks. It is filtered and purified to make it safe for drinking. If you want a hot shower, the water can be heated using a coil in the wood stove, which also serves as the only source of heating for the cabin. Several solar panels generate electricity for the water pump and 12-volt LED lights, which the owners handmade from cans attached to pieces of branches.
